Solar PV for Waste Management: Yorwaste's Energy Transformation

Following the success of our energy reduction project at Yorwaste, which delivered an impressive 92% energy cost savings through intelligent lighting systems, Yorwaste once again partnered with Energy Oasis. This time, their mission was to take control of energy costs further and reduce grid reliance, leading to the implementation of a solar PV system at their Thirsk Waste Transfer Station.

Yorwaste, North Yorkshire's largest waste management company, faced rising energy costs while managing over half a million tonnes of waste annually. To combat volatile energy prices and reduce grid reliance, they needed a clean, cost-effective energy solution to ensure long-term operational efficiency.

Reducing Energy Costs and Increasing Security

Energy Oasis partnered with Yorwaste to install a cutting-edge solar PV system at their Thirsk Waste Transfer Station. Spread across two buildings with steel trap roofs, the installation features:

  • 276 JA Solar 590W Modules

  • SolarEdge Optimised System (SE30k and SE66.6k inverters)

  • K2 Mounting Rail System

  • Emlite Generation Meters

This tailored system ensures optimal energy performance, robust reliability, and seamless integration while maintaining site operations.

The Solution: Solar Energy for Efficiency

With the new solar array, Yorwaste has achieved impressive outcomes:

  • Annual Savings: £17,500+ in energy costs

  • Export Revenue: £7,500+ annually from selling excess energy back to the grid

  • Year 1 Total Revenue: £25,000+

  • ROI: Just 4.1 years

  • Carbon Reduction: 24.57 tonnes saved annually

  • Grid Independence: Annual reliance reduced by 35%

The system also produces 127,000+ kWh of renewable energy yearly, bolstering Yorwaste's commitment to green energy.

Results That Matter

Kevin Smith, Head of Corporate Services at Yorwaste, shared his thoughts on the project’s success:
"Yorwaste has recently installed a large solar array on its facility in Thirsk. We partnered with Energy Oasis and Energi to undertake the project. This is the largest installation that Yorwaste has currently undertaken, and we are delighted with the results. The project was completed safely, on budget, and in a timely manner. Any issues raised by Yorwaste during the construction phase were swiftly and professionally dealt with. The team also managed to install the array with very minimal operational downtime for the site, which was a critical requirement for Yorwaste. An excellent job well done."
