A Year of Impact: Energy Oasis Reflects on 2023 and Looks Ahead to 2024

As we close the chapter on an exceptional year, it's time to reflect on our progress towards Net Zero as a company and country and share our excitement for what lies ahead.

Net Zero Project Highlights

In 2023, we have supported a multitude of remarkable companies in their journey towards Net Zero, achieving noteworthy milestones that underscore our unwavering commitment to sustainability. Through strategic partnerships with Nippon Express, Van Leeuwen, Norsk Hydro, and JT Atkinson, we have facilitated substantial energy savings and propelled these companies significantly closer to Net Zero.

Holistic Energy Management at Norsk Hydro

At Norsk Hydro, a global aluminium manufacturer, we demonstrated how holistic energy management could yield financial benefits, environmental sustainability, and improved working conditions. Through intelligent LED installations and a circular economy approach, we achieved significant carbon savings and transformed their work environment.

Transformative Energy Solutions at Van Leeuwen

Our partnership with Van Leeuwen, a global trading company specialising in steel pipes and pipe and tube applications, led to the implementation of an Intelligent LED project. We achieved a staggering reduction in their annual energy costs and consumption, with a payback period of just 2.1 years, the projected savings over ten years is around £793,000. This figure is expected to nearly double over the product's lifetime!

Comprehensive Energy Management and Generation at Nippon Express

Our collaboration with Nippon Express exemplifies our comprehensive energy management strategy. By optimising SECR and ESOS reporting, facilitating energy contracts, deploying energy monitoring systems, and spearheading solar initiatives, we have successfully guided Nippon into cost-effective renewable energy generation. Remarkable reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions, leading to significant cost savings.

Noteworthy Energy Savings at JT Atkinson

Our work with JT Atkinson is another testament to the effectiveness of our energy-saving strategies. The initiatives implemented across their sites led to an 80% reduction in energy consumption. Each site receives approximately £3,400 per year in feed-in tariff and deemed export. Their electricity consumption was reduced to around £3,150 per site, proving that sustainable practices can indeed lead to significant monetary savings.

Renewable Energy News

It’s been a busy year for the renewable energy sector in the UK with a series of significant developments that promise to reshape the country's energy landscape. From new regulatory updates by Ofgem to international collaborations aimed at advancing hydrogen technology.

Fast-Tracking the Green Transition

In a bid to accelerate the shift towards renewable energy, Ofgem announced new rules allowing for fast-track electricity grid connections for viable energy projects. This move is expected to unlock new generation and battery storage capacity, enabling more than 40 new energy projects to get off the ground this year. By reducing red tape, these changes are set to catalyse investment in renewable energy and facilitate the integration of cleaner energy sources into the grid.

Hydrogen Technology Takes Centre Stage

The UK-Germany partnership to advance hydrogen technology marks a significant step towards becoming global pioneers in green hydrogen. The collaboration aims to harness the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source, offering substantial carbon emission reductions and increased energy security. However, while the benefits are clear, the challenge lies in scaling up production and ensuring the technology's commercial viability.

The Power of Community-Led Initiatives

The UK is witnessing a surge in community-led initiatives, which have shown remarkable effectiveness in managing demand and reducing transmission losses. These smaller, localised solutions complement larger-scale projects, providing a balanced approach to energy management. Such initiatives not only contribute to energy conservation but also foster community engagement and ownership in the green transition.

The Road Ahead

These developments signify a positive shift in the UK's energy policy. However, as highlighted in The King's Speech, there is an urgent need for more specific policies to guide the country's renewable energy future. As we navigate the challenges that lie ahead, the role of consumers and policymakers alike is crucial.

The shift to renewable energy presents a multitude of benefits, including reduced carbon emissions, increased energy security, and job creation. Yet, it also requires significant investment and the overcoming of technical and regulatory hurdles. As consumers, we can contribute by embracing renewable energy solutions in our daily lives and advocating for green policies.

The Future is Green

The recent developments in the UK's renewable energy sector are not just promising; they are essential for our future. As we continue to witness the devastating effects of climate change, the shift towards renewable energy cannot be seen as merely a choice but as an imperative.

As we step into 2024, we are particularly excited about developments in hydrogen technology, community energy schemes, and microgrids. We believe these innovations hold immense potential for transforming our energy landscape, making it cleaner, more efficient, and more inclusive.
