Harrogate Community House, managed by Harrogate & District Community Action (HADCA), serves as a central hub providing affordable office accommodations and services to the local voluntary and community sector. The building is comprised of 30 serviced offices, meeting and training rooms, video conferencing facilities, and is fully wheelchair accessible. With its high occupancy rate and extensive use, it was crucial for HADCA to find ways to reduce energy consumption and move towards a net-zero carbon footprint.
Project Background
Energy Oasis was approached to assist Harrogate Community House in their journey towards achieving net zero carbon, with an emphasis on reducing energy consumption and overall costs. Our team conducted a comprehensive survey of the property to understand the potential areas for improvement. Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, Chartered Institution of Building Services and Engineers (CIBSE) guidelines, and current Electrical standards, we developed a strategy to make the building more energy efficient.
Our Approach
Our survey revealed that the majority of the building's lighting was fluorescent and controlled by switches. Recognising this as an area for significant improvement, we proposed conversion to high-quality LED lights with individual controls and daylight harvesting. This solution would not only reduce energy consumption but also offer substantial cost savings on electricity bills.
Our Innovative Solution
The implementation of our proposed solution led to impressive results. The estimated annual energy usage reduced from 32,094 kWh to just 6,436 kWh, translating into an annual energy saving of 25,658 kWh. In monetary terms, this equated to an annual energy cost saving of £15,394.8. The return on investment (ROI) for the lighting upgrade was a mere 1.17 years, demonstrating the financial viability of the project alongside its environmental benefits.
